MORE that 350 residents from Wyndham have signed an online petition calling for a new school in Williams Landing.

The petition called on Wyndham Council, the state and federal governments and Cedar Woods property group to build a school in the suburb.

Williams Landing Community and Residents Group member Aaron An said the council and the State Government needed to listen to residents.

“We want the council to put Williams Landing on the recommendation list for schools and we have been asking for this for quite some time,” Mr An said.

The decision to build a sports oval on a potential school site was criticised heavily by the community advocate, who said not enough community consultation was undertaken.

He said the area was one of the fastest growing in the state and nearby schools would not meet the needs of the suburb with increasing development.

Petitioner May Wang said Williams Landing was growing rapidly but lacked infrastructure.

“It is such a pain that there are not enough infrastructure facilities especially schools, which should be considered as the key factor of the development of this area,” Ms May said.

Another supporter Irene Nurdin wrote on the petition “access to a good education is a basic need for every family ... please make it happen”.

Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said she understood the need for residents to access quality schools in the area.

She said the council had received a number of letters from residents wanting a school in the suburb and were aware of the online petitions on the issue.

“The advice that council has received indicated that the demand for schools in Williams Landing will be met by the construction of two new schools in nearby Truganina South and Truganina East,” Ms Grigsby said.

She said the council would continue to work with communities to address the need for more schools in Wyndham.
